I have been riding some form of recumbent bike or trike since 2005. It's really the best way to ride a bike pain-free. My longest ownership of a recumbent was from 2011 - 2023, riding on trikes. I started on a Catrike Speed, then moved to an ICE Sprint 26 that I rode across the USA in 2016, followed by a trip from Vancouver BC to Los Angeles, CA in 2017. Those awesome trips were self-supported, and I rode with my wife every pedal stroke of the way. Fast forward to the realization that if I wanted to some some group rides with regular upright riders, I wasn't going to do it on a trike. The trikes are extremely stable but can't really climb very well, and they are just slower overall than a two-wheeled bike. I had always been intrigued by the MBB and front-wheel drive of the Cruzbike, and I found a really nice used S40 for sale in late 2023. Was there a learning curve? Yes! But it's been completely worth it. I now can ride with friends and participate in fundraising bike rides. In August of 2024, I celebrated with a century ride in La Crosse, WI raising funds for the Breakthrough T1D charity and marking 50 years living with Type 1 diabetes, and 70 years on the planet.
